Unity of the Heartland Leadership Council

Sheryl

Sheryl Myers - Minister

What led you to find Unity and Unity of the Heartland?
I found Unity when I was living in the Washington, DC area. A friend took me to Unity of Washington, DC and I immediately felt home. I attended there for three years until I was led to go to New World Unity in Springfield, Virginia, which was the community that so lovingly “launched” me into ministerial school. I initially came to Unity of the Heartland as a ministerial student intern. It was a wonderful experience meeting and connecting with the congregation for those ten weeks. When founding minister, Reverend Robin Ferguson, discerned it was hers to do to take a position at the Association of Unity Churches, I was asked to come be the temporary minister upon her departure. After graduating and being ordained, I was then asked to be the permanent minister here at the Heartland.

What is your role on the council?
It is my great joy to serve on the council as part of being the minister here. It is a co-creative adventure where we all contribute what we discern from Spirit’s guidance within.

What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
I went skydiving when I was in college. It was quite an adventure and doing it once has proven to be just plenty!

Connie

Connie Babcock - Chair of Council

What led you to find Unity and Unity of the Heartland?
A dear friend of mine invited me to come experience a service at Unity of the Heartland. My soul immediately felt like it had come home. I was amazed by the heartfelt acceptance and unconditional love of this community. I was unfamiliar with Unity and any of its teachings, but my Spirit recognized the Truth that we are all perfect, abundant, Expressions of God!

Why did you join the council?
Our former minister and founder of Unity of the Heartland, Robin Ferguson, casually suggested that I be on the council. While at the time I did not embrace my leadership qualities, I knew it was the perfect opportunity for me to give back to the community that I hold so dear to my heart. I admire and look up to the Unity leaders and am grateful for the learning experiences that I gain by serving with them. Being of service is imperative to me, and my desire is to assist others in Being all that we are Called to BE!

What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
My secret dream is to be a musical performing artist---the next Reba McIntyre!

What are some of your favorite quotes or affirmations?

Tim

Tim James - Treasurer

What led you to find Unity and Unity of the Heartland?
My introduction to Unity as an official entity came in 2003 as an Olathe resident driving by signs announcing 'Unity of the Prairie' meetings. Then, after a few discussions with my co-worker Mike Oberg I began a more serious investigation. Through the magic of MP3 messages on the Internet, I began a sporadic participation from afar. After several years and many changes to myself, the decision to begin attending Unity of the Heartland emerged as the next step.

Why did you join the council?
When invited to consider joining the council, I was quite humbled and intrigued. On the one hand I felt very ignorant and inexperienced, never having done something like that before, but on the other I knew that participating at a leadership level would remove any excuses I might have about not having a voice. The excitement, fear, hope, and challenge proved too much for me to ignore.

What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
I cry (or at least develop a 'big throat lump') at some point during most movies.

What are some of your favorite quotes or affirmations?
"Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid." - Albert Einstein
"Wisest is she who knows she does not know." - Jostein Gaarder
"Some things have to be believed to be seen." - Madeleine L'Engle
"We read books to find out who we are. What other people, real or imaginary, do and think and feel...is an essential guide to our understanding of what we ourselves are and may become." - Ursula K. Le Guin
"Your head's like mine, like all our heads; big enough to contain every god and devil there ever was. Big enough to hold the weight of oceans and the turning stars. Whole universes fit in there! But what do we choose to keep in this miraculous cabinet? Little broken things, sad trinkets that we play with over and over. The world turns our key and we play the same little tune again and again and we think that tune's all we are." - Grant Morrison
"The unreal is more powerful than the real. Because nothing is as perfect as you can imagine it. Because its only intangible ideas, concepts, beliefs, fantasies that last. Stone crumbles. Wood rots. People, well, they die. But things as fragile as a thought, a dream, a legend, they can go on and on. If you can change the way people think. The way they see themselves. The way they see the world. You can change the way people live their lives. That's the only lasting thing you can create." - Chuck Palahniuk
"The truth knocks on the door and you say, "Go away, I'm looking for the truth," and so it goes away. Puzzling." - Robert M. Pirsig
"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, Nothing is going to get better. It's not." - Dr. Seuss (The Lorax)

What led you to find Unity and Unity of the Heartland?
I belonged to a local study group for the Institute Of Noetic Sciences. I noticed that many of the members also attended Unity churches and also went to Unity Temple for the Cornerstone speaker series (which is now defunct). These two connections caused me to try Unity at Overland Park about ten years ago. I was immediately captivated by the guilt-free, heart-centered atmosphere. After several minister changes, I was looking for another Unity church when Vicky Joyce told me about Unity of the Prairie (now Unity of the Heartland). Again, I found the spiritual home I had been missing.

Why did you join the council?
After attending Unity of the Heartland for several months, I decided that I wanted to commit myself to sustaining and growing this ministry. I loved Robin's messages and spiritual integrity and wanted to be sure that her voice was heard by all who needed it. Joining the council seemed like the best way to accomplish that (and Robin twisted my arm!).

What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
I collect Southwestern and Native American artwork and study Native American traditions.

What are some of your favorite quotes or affirmations?
"There are only two ways of viewing this world; you can act as if nothing is a miracle OR as if everything is a miracle. I choose the latter." - Paraphrased from Albert Einstein.

What books have been most helpful to your spiritual growth?
The Road Less Traveled by Scott Peck. This book started me on my current spiritual path.
The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. This book shows how simple and difficult spiritual integrity can be.
The Power of Now and The New Earth by Ekhart Tolle. The books draw us into the present moment, where all power exists.

What is your favorite snack food?
Chocolate ice cream

What led you to find Unity and Unity of the Heartland?
My wife and I had not been actively involved in an organized spiritual life until several years ago. Our daughter was married at UCOP and we started attending church there occasionally. About three years ago we began going on a regular basis and also attended several of the special event speakers. Then we heard that Olathe had a Unity Church and felt that we should try it. We both felt that we had found a new home when we attended Unity of the Heartland.

Why did you join the council?
After attending UOH for several months, Don McClasky asked if I would be interested in being on the council. I wasn’t totally confident in my leadership abilities, but knew that I wanted to try to help in whatever ways that I could.

What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
Most people don’t know that I have a German son-in-law that is a doctor of pediatric neonatology.

What are some of your favorite quotes or affirmations?
"Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself." - Chinese Proverb
"God is in me or else is not at all." - Wallace Stevens
"The nature of God is a circle of which the center is everywhere and the circumference is nowhere." - Empedocles

What books have been most helpful to your spiritual growth?
